Vineyards
Where wine is born
The vineyards stretch across terraces around the village of Šmarje. Just like the village and the surrounding hillside, the vineyards also have a southern exposure, except for the ‘Postojno’ and ‘Maratovec’ vineyards, which are oriented towards the east and are ideal for producing Sauvignon “cru” and Pinela “cru”. The soil consists of skeletal and hyperskeletal flysch with an average content of organic matter and low water retention capacity.
The vine training system is single Guyot. The small yields (around 1 kg of grapes per vine) are expressed in the bottle with richness of flavour, minerality, and structure. The harvest of white varieties takes place at the optimal maturity of acids and aromas, preserving the varietal character and freshness of the wine. Red varieties are harvested in the second half of September or at the beginning of October, at the optimal phenolic ripeness and aromas of ripe fruit.
